    Bel Air - advice on furnishing a maid's room

    Hi all,

    We have just moved into Bel Air Phase 1 and need to furnish the maid's room before our maid moves in. The room is tiny and has doors opening on 3 walls, so it's a real challenge to create a nice living space for her. We are new to HK so would really appreciate any advice/tips you can give.

    A loft bed wouldn't work because a) there's nowhere else to sit and b) our maid doesn't like them. So instead we need a single bed with storage drawers underneath. But the room is only 180cms long and Ikea don't make anything that short so I'm guessing we will have to have one custom built - any tips on that?

    Also because there's no space for other pieces of furniture, we need to put lots of shelving up. Any advice on where to buy that and who to have put it up, or whether having it custom-built is easy and not too expensive, would again be welcome.

    And of course any brilliant space-saving storage ideas we haven't thought of would be gratefully received too!

    best wishes, Sarah

    Check this out with her, but one option would be just to have a good mattress and no bed. This sounds like I am trying to be cheap but honestly it may well not be a problem for her. Before anyone jumps down my throat for mistreating maids, we all sleep this way in our house. For the majority of Filipinos I don't think this would be a problem at all and actually I like it.

    we had a similar issue with our maid's room being small. There is a shop in Wanchai who come and measure the room and custom make. We paid about 3,500 for what seems what you are looking for.

    Our neighbor just used a shop in Wanchai for the same thing, but I can't remember the street it was on.

    Try asking your helper if she knows of this or a similar shop. I've found that our helper knows were to find quite a few things that I don't have a clue about. For shelving, lots of people do use IKEA wall mounting shelves.

    Its great that you are trying to help set up a nice room for her.

    Try Jade Rattan

    Sarah, is this what you had in mind?

    <I bought this one>

    or... if you have a high ceiling, then try this for storage space:

    These beds length 72 inches, (around 183cm) and JadeRattan has many brances. They will deliver and assemble for you, quite similar to IKEA.

    Its English site:

    You could always look into a Japanese futon which can be rolled up during the day for more room. Itou Futon in Morrison Hill Rd in Wan Chai has a nice selection.
