a question for modified car enthusiasts

I know it's illegal to modify any part of your car in HK, though 70% of the cars I see on the road either have different allow wheels, or stupid looking bodykits.

How relaxed is the law against people like us, I mean what if I owned a high performance car with just about every modification to make your mouth water? Thing is, some time or another, I'm bound to bump into a police roadblock, so what are my options?

just out of curiousity, why spend thousands on modifying a car a lot where you can spend about the same or less for a car that can have the same power naturally. Otherwise I'd say just buy a programmer and flash the car's computer. It's not uncommon for some cars to gain anywhere from 15-60 hp just from making the computer more efficient and specialized. I have considered on flashing my '06 VW GLI (it's been known to get 40ish hp from a flash on those) I just didn't feel like spending anymore money on upgrades to cars that I most likely won't bring with me to HK next year. =P

As far as looks go, I'd say if the car doesn't look halfway decent stock it'll probably cost you a lot on a body kit to make it look good.

Cars that typically have a strong "WOW" factor from the dealer are german cars. I know you would want to stun the ladies so get a VW (or whatever fits your profile)

Police will HK usually use this law to tackle "road racing" matter, as getting evidence of "road racing" is very difficult.

Most of the time, they will just close their eyes.

Of coz, for tidy mod., like changing wheels, thin tyres, etc.....the risk is very low.

Clarence, thanks for clearing things up , nice to know suttle mods are tolerated. What would you class off limit mods then?

Interesting stuff, thanks for providing seems that modifications to the styling department are alright, but to change anything in the engine bay which isn't standard wouldn't be allowed.

Any changes to bodywork or other has to be registered with your insurance company.

If you crash and make a claim any loss adjuster will fail your claim IN TOTAL, if mods have been made and not notified. BEWARE - Insurance companies love NOT to pay out.

Mr EL, i suppose you will do the exact opposite to the recommendation by the govt, or will you leave the realms of ultimate modifications to the virtual worlds of gran turismo on your playstation!!

Mate, I've already made the mods so there's no going back until one day where i'm faced with a roadblock and the police will want me to take my car for a vehicle inspection

    Anyhow, i'll be extra careful
