most likely china, but you never know what you get in china....let me rephrase that, it will most likely be a "knock-off" in china.

All depends if you want a brand name. If you do then you may risk being duped if you shop across the border.

I'm pretty sure consumer electronics are cheaper in Hong Kong. Mobile phones certainly are, though I'm not sure about mp3 players.

Try Walmart in China, saw an MP3 adverstized there by NEC for 499, don't know how good etc., but worth checking out for comparison purpose.

Basic consumer electronics are cheaper in China. (they're MADE there!!)

However, if you're looking for reputable brands with solid warranties, it's Hong Kong all the way.

That said, most of the "reputable brands" do have manufacturing facilities in China that make the same of products (same tech specs., only difference being labeling and packaging) that are sold locally (in China) under different generic brands.

Being made there doesn't necessarily mean that they are for sale there too.
Nike makes its products in third world countries and ships them to other countries where it can sell them at a profitable price.
Saying that, cheap unknown consumer electronics made in China for China (and other markets) will be cheaper in China. However, I doubt that well known brand named products are cheaper there as they are not even based in China.

It depends on the product and the brand (and the exchange rate). I bought a couple of mobile phones a while ago and got a pretty good deal compared to the HK price.

My first iPod was a lot cheaper in HK than China and it was very dfficult to find in China.

Grey imports can be a lot cheaper in China than HK, however, many places will not give a warrenty on these.

I bought a Panasonic MiniDV in China (made in Japan) and paid slightly more than if I'd bought it in HK. The tapes are a lot cheaper in China. I think they are made there.

Most Chinese brands tend to be cheaper on the mainland than in HK but not always.

It pays to do a little market research before buying anything.

Ipod nano 2 GB cost around 1500 HKD here in Shanghai it cost 2100 RMB so HK is cheaper, also HK has no tax..

    components people components!
Just wanted to add that maybe its the exact same model and all that.. but it doesnt mean the quallity of the components are the same. Japanese components are the best together with taiwanese..while mainland arent as good eventhough they are getting better.
And i guess everyone whos been shopping electronics has seen the "chinese sony" and the likes of it
For those who have not, its a sony model you cant find anywhere else in the world and if you call sony well they wont know of it either if you get my meaning.
On another note checking here in HK on the pice of equipment your buying where its made is a good thing.. its not unusual i would say they tell you its made in japan but the sticer actually says....yepp you guessed it China
