If your behind a firewall you need to do something called portforward.
If it's personal home/small office router then you need to forward these ports:
27290 - 27292 and check TCP to the IP of the computer you run the BT client on, ie. 192.168.1.X
    And port :
14164 - 14165 TCP/UDP to the same IP as in previous step.
If its a software firewall like Northon personal firewall or windows firewall, disable the and uninstall the garbage and get a router.

And like everyones else say..dont use the kazzaa junk..im ashamed its swedish the pain the agnony.
Its almost as unbarable as the fact that DC (direct connect) the best P2P file shareing avalible on the planet is practicaly non exisitent in asia...*SOB*
    Just like dedicated 10-100-1000mb broadband.
With my last breath i will curse PCCW and their ******** DSL service thats slower than my dads 28kbps modem..10mb yeah right! in your dreams PCCW in your dreams!!! To squeeze 10mb out of your dsl i would need to use a bulldozer...you kvackers!
Ok im gonna go spend the rest of the remaining night cursing and condeming PCCW untill i eventually fall asleep while waiting for that 1mb file to finnish its one week long download ;-).

errr and i just got this idea..why not start a private DC hub for all of us?
Anyone up for that? i bet the file transfers will be way faster.
Anyone got some old PIII computer lying around to run the server HUb on?
I can spare some ram and a 20gb drive.

As JohanSWE said, there shouldn't be a problem with PCCW, as i use it fine. For DL any torrents you need a good connection speed. I think forwarding ports is going to be way too complicated to newbies at this point. An easy DL client to use is 'Torrentopia' (google it). Install it and then re-start PC. There is no spam or spyware. Once installed, go to the 'links button' at the top and choose to 'add to links' and put these addresses in the address line:
    http://filelist.org
    http://www.uknova.com/
    http://www.fbtz.com/forum/index.php?
    http://www.torrentreactor.net/
    http://www.puretna.com/main.php
    http://www.mininova.org/sub/1
    http://www.torrentbox.com/
    http://www.torrentsearch.com
These are torrent (file) sites that cover pretty much every catagory you will need. You will have to register with most of them(free), but they are totally safe and spam free. Once saved and registered to each address link, choose 'links' again and just click on one of the listed sites. With most of the things you want to DL, you will click on the name, and then choose to 'save' file to a selected drive (such as d), then it will come up with a box that gives you the option to 'open file'. Do this and it will start to DL. It may be slow at first, or even come up with an error, but leave it for a while and eventually it will start (not always but 90% of the time). The important thing to remember is that there are 2 things next to each torrent file, seeds & peers. Seeds are the ammount of people fith the 'full' file still sharing with everyone, peers are people who are still 'getting' the file from the seeds and other peers. The more seeds, the quicker the DL. So, if you see a file with 1 seed, it will take a lot longer than one with 120. Also, if having any connection trouble still, go to settings and in 'upload/limit per connection' put 80, and in 'max simultaneous transfers' put 3. The lower ammount of DLing files at one time will make it faster. Trying to DL 15 files at a time for instance makes it clog up and slow. In the advanced option in settings, try the starting port as 49333 (put if you enter this, you will probably have to okay it with your modem port), better to keep as is first. Remember, you also HAVE to share files, this means once you have finished DLing a file you should let it keep running so it can seed to others. At least untill you have 'uploaded' as much as the file took to 'Download'. If you do not share (most sites have a ratio system) they will ban you from the site. Good luck!

To add a couple of links to Baron's list:

http://www.vcdquality.com - good for comparing latest movie quality (I then take the best source and search in...)
http://www.isohunt.com - a simple search site for torrents (think it links to some of the others Baron listed).

We just arrived in HK last week and went for the PCCW Now Broadband package which is supposedly 8Mb/s and comes with a little ASUS wireless router.

If anyone else is in the same boat and wants some instructions on setting up this router with port forwarding and to provide a local DHCP Wireless LAN with only a single PCCW account, let me know (I.e. supporting multiple computers, printers etc sharing one connection). I've been using it for BitTorrent (I use BitTornado) and Shareaza so far with reasonable success.

The best download rate on a single torrent that I've seen so far is about 200KB/s (approx. 1.6Mb/s?) from some of the better seeded UKNova TV programmes.

Is this normal? What's the best torrent download rate others have seen on similar lines?

Wow thanks guys, lots of info available!

I've got my first download happening!

Dick_In_Peak I used thepiratebay.org, and chose something popular, that would have lots of seeds; so chose an Alicia Keys album - don't like R & B, but nevertheless it worked straight away! Beforehand I was trying to download Echo and the Bunnymen albums, through Torrentz.com, so I guess the less popular music is just harder to get hold of, plus I'm not sharing anything yet.

Baron, I'm using a Mac so unfortunately cannot use Torrentopia. But will thoroughly check out your list of sites, and your tutorial was very helpful.

JohanSWE, thanks but I can't get my head round the port forwarding thing at present. Some issues:
1 I don't know how to find out my IP address (can do on a PC, but am using a Mac)
2 Don't know what TCP and UDP are

I don't have a personal firewall, and now that the downloads have started working - am I right in thinking that I don't need to do the port-forwarding?

Baron and others, could you help me do a little tweaking?

    Here's my settings:

    GLOBAL:
    TCP Port 6881
    Maximum upload rate KiB/s: 0

    TORRENT:
Maximum Upload Slots: 4 (Upload to no more than this many peers at once)
Initiate Connection Gap: 40 (Stop initiating connections when connected to this many peers)
Accept Connection Gap: 80 (Stop accepting connections when connected to this many peers)

    QUEUE:
    Enable Queueing: Yes

When to stop a running torrent:
Either "when my download to upload ratio reaches 1 to": 0.80
Or "this many minutes after finishing": 1
I have the first option selected.

When to auto start the next torrent:
Either "Only once all non-seeds are stopped"
Or "As soon as a torrent is auto stopped"
I have the first option selected.

    Any useful pointers?

The best i've had ( quite a few times) is 580Mb/s. I average about 350Mb/s on UK nova for newer files. I'm on the 6Mb plan.

pistachico, you want to put your Maximum upload rate to about 40 - 50 as you need to share as well. The TCP Port 6881 is standard and should be fine for most sites, though i use a differnt port 49333 that i had port forwarded. Stick with 6881 for now.
