Wasn't thinking about using someone's else's home-helper, which is illegal - Was only on the lines of a friendly Chinese homebody type neighbor to provide home cooking and daily Chinese soups, but that seems a no-go...

'Ahrens' has got another solution. The government provides retraining opportunities for HK permanent residents called Employees Retraining Board - Smart living. You can hire a PT helper to cook/clean daily, they will also buy the groceries daily from the market as well. You will have to find one that specialises in the cooking side of house chores. Usually the helper is Cantonese speaking, but that would not pose a problem for your mother I believe.

List of house chores they are trained and tested on before being allowed to work in this context includes:
    - General cleaning (sweep, mop)
    - Window cleaning
    - Ironing
    - Cooking (Including shopping for the ingredients at the market)
... Some will be better at certain skills then others, You can request that you are looking for a cook for an elderly, but it is trial and error.

Believe the market price is around HKD60/hr, ask the local ERB office for the going rate. Remember it is a requirement by law that you have insurance for the helper. Any insurance firm will have this coverage.

thanks, for HK$60 per hour, 3 hours per day part time, would cost more than a typical foreign live in maid at around HK$3500 per month. Don't you think so.
