    Awful fixed line service

Some months ago, I switched to Wharf's digital homeline service since I don't use my fixed line very often and it was a lot cheaper than PCCW. The line quality is just awful. There's usually a lot of noise and now I often can't even get a tone. They've sent a technician over three times--the first two times, they said the problem was with my telephone, so I bought a new one. The problems persisted and the third time, the technician said that the line in my building is shared with upstairs neighbours and the solution is to install another line by drilling a hole through the wall.

This is just unacceptable and I want to know if I can be released from my 18 month contract without paying the penalty. In fact, I think I should be compensated for this shoddy service. Also, is PCCW the only half-decent service provider?

I'm not an expert, but sounds it illegal / illogical that you are sharing a line with your neighbour! I assume they are referring to their fixed line service and not i-cable?? I tried WT&T before and it was fine for me, but I changed to HGC which had a better offer for me. The only problems I've had (1 in 3 yrs) are when the line does go down after some wires in the telephone room are mysteriously pulled, usually after service visit by some other fixed line operator.

In any case, if you are having trouble getting basic dialtone, and this has the potential to affect 999 service, you should def. be compensated.

How is the quality of the HGC line? Is there a contract length? I hear that broadband-based fixed lines are prone to these problems.
