    Octopus Card

What are the advantages of having an Octopus Card besides convenience? Do some merchants give discount on purchases if a customer uses the card?

Wellcome, mc donalds, manning and many other shop will give you cash reward.

You have to register your octopus card at one of the merchant first.

Also link it to AAVS and then you get all the credit card benefits such as bonus points, 56 days interest free repayments, etc.

Some residences use Octopus as an entry card - you can have it tied to your HK ID. Once tied you can also automatically top up the value with Visa or Mastercard.

Marketplace and many other shops do Octopus points, a basic reward scheme.

Wow, I didn't know that it was such a useful card.....I should have checked into its website first but I found that information that I received from forum members are much easier to understand and relate to than some websites.

One thing for sure, the Octopus saved us a lot of hassle from getting change each time we needed to ride the bus or MTR. Wish we had something like that in the USA> Although we do have Fastrek transponder to automatically pay all the Calif. bridge tolls, it is not nearly as versatile as the Octopus Card.

    Thanks everyone!

Make sure you do what MrMoo suggests!
    1. Obtain a Visa/Master card with a good point system
    2. Enable AAVS from the above Master
    3. Obtain ParknShop MoneyBack Card
    4. Register your Octopus Card with Wellcome for their points system
    5. Spend Spend Spend ! You can now enjoy points, which can actually translate to $$$

Only if you're happy with these commercial entities knowing exactly who you are, where you go and what you buy.

I use Octopus a lot but I wouldn't link it to anything that identifies me.
