    Different/fun things to do on The Dark Side

    Ok, I'm compiling a list of 100 interesting/different/quirky/fun things to do on The Dark Side, for the benefit of all the HK Island people who too rarely venture through the tunnel... (yes, that includes myself).

    Appreciate any suggestions - let's get a good thread going here.

    I'm not really talking shopping destinations (although I recognise there are some cooler/quirkier ones), markets or hiking trails. I think there's plenty of info on this site about those options.

    Obvious examples of the types of destinations I'd like to focus on are:
    * Brides Pool
    * Hong Kong wetlands / bird sanctuary
    * Giant Buddha (yes, I know - wayyy too obvious)
    * Chin Lin Nunnery
    * Kam Tin Walled Village
    * Kowloon Walled City Park
    * Tung Ping Chao rock formations,
    although I'm sure we can do better than this to lure Centralites out of their comfort zone for some Dark Side Action. Please contribute!

    You could just extract stuff from the list that's already been done: The Life List - 750 things to do in Hong Kong before you die. | HK-magazine.com

    Thanks. Some interesting suggestions there, although hard work picking them out from a lot of other waffle...!

    * Wong Tai Sin Temple
    * 10,000 Buddha Temple
    * Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees
    * Chungking Mansions
    * Cattle Depot Artists Village
    * Pet a cat and enjoy the sunlight at the Old District Office North in Tai Po
    * Brave the guard dogs to admire the colonial-style mansion Jessville
    * Visit the Tai O Culture Workshop to understand the Tai O fishing culture
    * Spend a night at Bruce Lee’s old home in Kowloon Tong. It’s now a love hotel.
    * Pick a paper hungry ghost offering in Sai Ying Pun
    * Kowloon City Muslim restaurant
    * Broadway Cinematheque and next door Kubric cafe.
    * Windsurf at Cheung Chau / Wakeboard in Tai Tam / Sail at Hebe Haven / Kayak to the Sokos Islands
    * Use the New Territories cycling path
    * Flutter through Tai Po’s Butterfly Garden
    * Hope to see a pink dolphin at Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park
    * Camp out at Tung Ping Chau campsite

    Other suggestions??

    Don't forget :

    the trail around the Peak (what's its name?)
    The outer islands especially Cheung Chau.
    Sai Kung
    The two "monkey" reservoirs
    Repulse Bay
    Women Street

    Try again.

    At least 2 of the above on on HKI ... not the "dark side".

    Ha ha - perhaps - but the OP was specifically asking for stuff NOT on HKI!

    For bride's pool rd there is a lot of hiking available just past the cycle paths and some decent, cheap thai restaurants near the cycle hire shops.

    I would avoid the cycling paths on nice sunny afternoons and only go there if you

    1) Go there early in the morning when the shops open
    2) Go mid week outside school holidays
    3) When the weather is cold.

    I am a bit of a fanatic and go there when it does get a bit crowded but you need eyes in the back of your head.

    What about the HK Geopark out in Sai Kung? Great scenary and cool beaches.

    And if you're including Chi Lin you have to check out Nan Lian Gardens over the road. One of my favourite places to hang out on a sunny day.

    A day in Tai Po is well worth it. There is a cool railway museum, a nice little temple and the town is generally a nice place to wander around.

    How about a bike ride along the river/canal/water thing in Sha Tin? Get the KCR to Sha Tin, walk to the water side, hire a bike and off you go. Not one to do when it gets too hot but it's a great way to see some of the NT.

    Other than that - Mes Amis on Ashley Road (this is an expat site after all!)
