Hi, does anyone know the kind of prices to expect from lawyers?
What kind of hourly rate should I be paying to a decent lawyer who specialises in intellectual poperty?
Or how much would you pay for a flat-fee for a lawyer to daw up a contract as outlined below (including hourly rates and consultation)?
I don't know whether I should be paying thousands or tens of thousands!
I've sent out emails, and now waiting for responses. A copy of the email is below:
I am looking for a quotation on having a contract drawn up between an illustrator and myself.
I have written a children’s book, and want the artist to draw and colour approximately 12 A3 pages. I have designed characters, drawn storyboards, and written text.
I would like to own the exclusive rights to transfer his work and images to other mediums. With this one book I aim to use the existing images to:
- Market the book
- Design packaging
- Create Merchandise
- Design a website logo
- Reproduce the images to use for website graphics
- Create an online sample of the book
- Create new editions of the book, whether it be hard or soft back etc. Reproduce the book in different languages. Release book club editions.
- Create derivative works based upon the artwork (Colouring Pages, Colouring Books, Flashcards, Create a CD-Rom, Website Flash Animations etc)
I want to pay the illustrator a flat fee, but include a clause whereby he receives a share of the profit for every book sold & products bearing his images.
In short, I’m hoping to offer the illustrator some kind of incentive even though the initial flat-fee may be low.
At this point, I understand there is no lawyer-client relationship between you and I. But I thought some information might be useful, as I am looking for a rather specific quotation.
Or does anyone have any recommendations for lawyers?
Any help is much appreciated
