This is my first Chinese New Year and it seems to be that nobody really does anything. There is no ball dropping, no cheering... no little hats

I thought ball dropping only ever happened to young boys when reaching puberty?Originally Posted by Emuse:
Chinese new year over here is more of a family thing just eating and playing mahjong and that type of thing.
Take a ferry to Macau. You can "feel" CNY thicker over there, and play firework on the street! A lot of HK ppl go there for casino too, to try out their new year luck!
On the first day of CNY, most people will sleep till noon if they don't visit their relatives. Since most eateries are closed, they'll cook noodles or go to Macdonald's. On the second day, married people will go to their folks' or in-laws' home for lunch/dinner. Young people will go to a movie. The third day of CNY is horse racing day or for going to the Cheh Kung Temple.
If you want to enjoy CNY's fireworks without being stuck in the midst of a crowd, you have to find spots other than Tsim Sha Tsui, Central and Wanchai.
I'll be in China :-)
Leave HK! I was here for CNY one year it was quiet to the point of being a ghost town. I'm going to be in New York this year for CNY
Btw China is awsome during CNY (depsite what many locals will tell u: too many ppl, lots of thiefs or else). Usually the cities/villages are much more decorated and ppl are in a friendly mood.
Every year I've been to a different place for CNY (Yunnan, Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Yangshou) and I never regretted it !
Collect Lai Seeeee!! Yeahhh!!!
