has topping up octopus card with your credit card been nothing but trouble free?

has there been any problems that you wouldnt have with a standard octopus card?
it is suppose to be true, that if lost, and reported to octopus , the credit in it gets refunded - 50hkd administration costs right?

if it is wrongly used by someone unknown, would your cc bank refund the amount used? and can the link between cc and octopus be terminated with a phone call?

    Thanks in advance

For the normal octopus card, after u use return it to the MTR. and you will get a $50 hkd refund.

not sure about the credit octopus card.

As I understand it you are talking about the Automatic Add Value Service using a credit card to top up a normal Octopus automatically, (not the combined Octopus and Credit Card from Citibank).

A standard "loan" Octopus has a deposit of HK$50 which will be refunded if the physical card is returned.

If you Octopus is used then the value is gone - it is not Octopus's or the bank's fault if you have lost control of your card. The link between Octopus and the card can be stopped with a simple phone call, so your loss is limited to the amount that is stored on the card at the point you report its loss.

Auto-recharging is limited to $250 or $500 per day.

My use of AAVS has been absolutely trouble-free, and great in terms of convenience.

I love mine - I use my Octopus for all sorts of small (and sometimes large) payments in stores/supermarkets etc because I know it will auto-recharge without me having to do anything.

Obviously if I lose it, that;'s a problem, but I did leave my purse on a bus once and when I got it back all the cash was gone but the credit cards and Octopus were untouched (although I keep it hidden in the back of the purse as obviously you never need to take it out).

    Yeah, trouble-free.

I had one of those Octopus watches that looks like a Rolex. If you've seen one you'll see how prolific they are. I had it linked to my credit card and that was ultimate convenience - never actually needing to carry a wallet, but literally having your credit card strapped to your arm (and telling you the time!). In fact, if you ever needed to make an underwater purchase, it was water resistant up to 50m!

Sadly though, the watch itself was not so sturdy. I accidentally dropped it and some of the markings inside the case came loose and interfered with the movement of the hands.

I sent it in, they de-activated it, sent me back the watch broken watch and the cash value that was still on it. The MTR agent said "No more octopus function, only watch function". I looked at the broken, dead watch and thought - yeah, only in Hong Kong.

I lost my Octopus with AAV in Shenzhen. I 'phoned to report it straight away, however I do seem to recall that the cut off point freezing transactions did not occur until some six hours later.

I also 'phoned my banks to cancel my credit cards, so apart from potentially losing the value on my Octupus, I could be confident that there would be no further automatic additions of value.

I can't recall what happened to the deposit that I paid for the card, however I do remember that getting the outstanding balance of my lost card transferred to my new card was a needlessly troublesome process.

interesting posts, how about over charges? I mean do yourselves check meticulously your credit card statement to confirm they correspond to the time when credit was added to the octopus card? And is there a more convenient form of the octopus card so it is less likely to be lost? An octopus ring for eg! not likely but you know what l mean

The octopus watch would probably be the least likely and most difficult I lose/steal.
As soon as the value of your octopus is negative it will be reloaded. For example, I bought a drink at 7-11 this morning and it put my card at -$1. By the time I went to enter the concourse (30 seconds) it had money on it again. I've had no problem with over charging.

I haven't figured out the magic voodoo to make my auto top up work yet. It's topped up once in the 3 months or so since I set it up. Utterly useless!

There is no magic voodoo... AAVS simply means your Octopus will automatically add value when it runs out...
There is a refill amount that you choose ($250 or $500) which will be credited once you run out of credit.

There is also a limit to the number of refills in one day..

it's dead easy and super convenient
