*Tesco and Asda are UK supermarkets and unlike Park N Shop and Wellcome, they actually do pass on savings they make (purchasing power they have) onto the consumers.... Just like Walmart in the states.
    Strewth!

You must have no idea at all how these companies arrive at these 'savings' they kindly pass on....

    Unbelievable.

Been here for 5 years and fail to see how i got "ripped off big time". I eat what I like, I shop around for options, and I eat a varied intake of different national foods. I was making a point of comparing costs, which is what I thought you were trying to do.

Are you instead asking to compare how cheap you can live by adjusting your behavior, habits, customs, and tastes to a "local" culture?

Actually I do eat Chinese foods, during my countless trips to China, along with my numerous meals I eat in HK. I eat a variety of foods from all different nations. I like to eat assortments, not only eat what you consider "local". Which brings me to....

your definition of "local". I think it may need clarification. Many HK locals I know eat a wider variety of food then I do. Many of them eat more expensive food then I do. Yet...you say "locals" only eat chinese food?

Actually now...you might be able to branch your eyes around the web page to see where I live. I never said it was beneath me. My point again...(seems you need reminders about what you started this thread for).....was to say that comparing getting a cheap beer at 7-11 is not the same as going out to a bar. going for fish ball soup everyday is not comparable to going for a pizza everyday.

That's how things work here. If you work for a bank for example, I'm sure they do plenty of exploiting too.

You're right though. I do tend to be a straight shooter. Plus I am never afraid to admit I'm wrong. (see below)

Getting ripped off big time was probably a poor choice of words. If you eat western food you pay a "premium".

I suppose I did move the goal posts a bit. I know speaking for myself, I did change my lifestyle around a bit. I mainly did it because I enjoyed moving to a new place and adjusting to a local culture.

No you're right. I was being an ass of course. Locals certainly do eat other types of foods including Western and Eastern. So do I.

All I'm saying is that paying $100 for a sandwich is a bit ridiculous, and I know it wasn't you who said that much someone else on here. Then again I don't know all the facts. Maybe it was like a foot long sub sandwich like in subway. Besides it's only my opinion. I am sure many people may consider that fair market value, especially in Central.

You're right. I'm not going to be Load Toad and refuse to admit defeat when I'm dead wrong. Cheers!

12" subs are in the range $60-70 in subway I believe.

Some guy was talking about spending $100 for a sandwich here when in the UK he was paying 2.99 pounds.

60-70 isn't too bad! Though I know how much they cost stateside, but I imagine they are slightly more expensive in HK

...i believe it's all relative...you may be inclined (and happy) to may more if you earn a good salary, or live modestly and happily if your salary is not so high...but surely this could be said of anywhere..?

I don't think you'd get a 6" Sub, 2 cookies (or a bag of chips) and a drink for only US$3.70 in a Subway in the US.

Or a Big Mac meal for only US$2.50

    I could be wrong though.

You can also live modestly when your salary is high and invest it.

All I really need to be happy is a nice computer for playing games, a large screen LCD tv for my computer, and a flat that's owned by me with mortgage paid off. I really am happy as a clam and my monthly recurring costs are really low.

But yeah that's just me, and I know this wouldn't be ideal for other people.
