    local charities

It has been some time since I last posted. Here we go...
The best of all boyfriend and I are getting married later this year. We don't really want/need wedding gifts and have decided that we like the idea of donations to 2 or 3 local charities instead of gifts. Does anybody have any recommendation. We'd like to be sure that the money really gets to the people who need it and is not eaten up by administration fees and/or corruption...

    That is very noble!

I know Crossroads International is a very genuine organisation. I voluntered there for sometime. They usually except goods in kind. I guess you can ask them about monetary donations. Or maybe you can accept the cash yourself and buy whatever Crossroads needs to send to needy people.

I'll recommend the Tung Wah Group and Po Leung Kuk. The Tung Wah Group has lots of public hospitals that help lots of people. Po Leung Kuk has an orphanage.

Thank you for the suggestions. I contacted the Po Leung Kuk by e-mail twice in the last few days asking for details and procedures, unfortunately they never replied.
Will contact the Tung Wah group today, thanks for suggesting them Valencia.
Swetapershad - thanks for suggesting Crossroads, but we'd really like the money going to a local charity in the most convenient way for our guests and us - meaning donations into a bank account or sending cheques.
Still hope the Po Leung Kuk will show some interest.
    Any more ideas?

My husband suggests Community Chest. It divides its donations among all the charities in HK.

Exclamation Interntaional Org with a grassroots approach

Try the YMCA in Cheung Sha Wan - they have several programs which work on empowering disadvantage youth in Hong Kong.

They work at the grassroots level within the community and have seen some excellent results. Contact Tariq over there to learn more.

Thank you all very much for your input. We decided to nominate the Po Leung Kuk and the Riding for the Disabled Assiciation.
