    map- bookshops or newspaper stalls.

compass and walking shoes - a whole st. in Mongkok with shops for sports supplies (forgot the name), but near Ladies' Market. Try also a stationery shop for the compass.

The best place to get HK walking maps is online - the stock in bookshops is often out of date (each of the seven sheets needed to cover the whole territory is reissued every year or two), and you get a discount from the government stationery office for ordering online so even with the postage it is cheaper overall.

    Start here: http://bookstore.esdlife.com/eng/default.asp
And follow the link to the Government Bookstore. You're looking for the Countryside Series of maps.

    Thanks for this info.

I am assuming the maps here are detailed enough for some of the country side hikes/walks that one hears so much about etc.

I am a novice and wanted to know how difficult things like the "Dragon's back", "thousand steps" etc are. And will they be shown on these maps.

    Just ordered a few....

    Hi all,
I think you can get all the things that you need for hiking including Maps, Compass, shoes, etc from a shop called Protrek. You can have a look at their website http://www.protrek.com.hk for what they sell and where the shops are.

Katanga, The countryside map series that you got from esdlife online shop should povide you detail path of the countryside hikes. However, if you want to know how difficult of the paths like Dragon's back, etc, i recommand you to buy any one of the two books: Walker's Companion or Hiking all in one. Both books have Chinese and English description of different popular path and their difficulty. You can have a check on the Chinese section of the big book store like the commercial press.

I hope this can help. Cheers and maybe we will meet up on the countryside one day.
