Dependant of a student?

    Dependant of a student?

My Wife is about to start at HKU, she has a student visa, valid for the next 12 months.

I am a British passport holder and currently in HK as a tourist (get 6 months stamp on arrival). I am trying to work out the best way to remain in HK for longer than 6 months. I have 2 options:

    1) Leave and re-enter HK before 6 months and get a renewed stamp.
    2) Apply for a dependant visa.

I am sure #1 is the easier of the two. But when my wife completes here MBA, she should be able to get a further extension of her visa in order to find a job here. Thus a dependant visa might be the best way forward.

My situation:- I own a UK based company, I draw a minimum salary and receive dividends (in order to minimise my tax burden in the UK).

If I apply for a dependant visa, what amount of money should I show in my bank account (minimum). Would US$50k be enough, or should I have more?

Your wife sponsors you. You don't sponsor yourself.

    From the ImmD website:

...the sponsor is able to support the dependant's living at a standard well above the subsistence level and provide him/her with suitable accommodation in the HKSAR.

    Good point, let me rephrase:

"If I apply for a dependant visa, what amount of money should my wife show in her bank account (minimum). Would US$50k be enough, or should she have more?"

US$50K would be fine. Get the Dependant Visa - you won't be able to work on that (Dependants on people on Sturdy Visas are the only ones who can't) but at least you won't have to worry about ImmD turning you away when you come back after a visitor visa run to Macao (or wherever). Getting the Depenandant Visa also starts the clock on the 7 years to Permanent Residence if that is something that you might want.

When your wife's status changes from Study to Employment (as a graduate of a local uni) then your Dependant Visa will then allow you to work.
