Just back. I see what you're getting at.

BUT if one did want to go through the naturalisation process to get official 'Chinese nationality' status (recognised by the HKSAR gov and NOT rely on just the 'say-so' indicated by one's HRP document issued by a mainland CTS office), and gave up Brit nationality temporarily for that purpose, any future attempt to regain this other 'foreign' passport/citizenship could trigger other questions and problems. Not as easy as one might imagine.

OR were you hoping that if questions aren't asked, you just wouldn't tell...? In that case - good luck.

-Home- return permit (obtained this priro to 1997, and just got it renew this year).

My question I would like to naturalise as a HK Chinese Nationality and Renounce (give up) my British citizenship/Nationality. After when this process is complete (may take 6-9months), I would like to re-apply for the British Nationality and at the same time still have HK Chinese nationality.

Has any one done something similar to this before? Can I still use my British passport in HK since I have already told them I have renounced it?

    Thank you for your assistance.
on what ground are can you apply for british nationality after you have renounced it?

Everyone who is a British Citizen is allowed to resume their citizenship after renouncing it. If you renounced it before 1983 then you can only do this once.

Details: UK Border Agency | Can I register as a British citizen if I have previously given up my citizenship?

Since I was born in the UK, that we not be a problem for me. I have already checked with Immigration in the UK, and the website says it is possible under certain circumstances.

Not that it's the case here but there are plenty of places in the world where having a chinese/HK passport allows you entry without visas or at much cheaper rates than with a western passport. I have thought about ditching my original passport to try to get the HK one(I have of course another personal reason that motivates me to think about it)

Hi, I think the HKSAR passport covers not only the Asia but also the Schegen, UK, Canada, and some South Amercian countries. This passport will be good if you are planning in staying in Asia especially in HK and China. Currently there are 141 VISA-FREE countries and regions for the HKSAR passport. Brilliant!!!!

I will let you all know what the outcome is in the future. I will start next week for the application of naturalisation. Thanks.

Hi mwong9413, I'd like to answer your question rather than nose as to why you want to do it or annoyingly give my opinion on whether I think its a good idea or not!

a.) China require you to give up your British Citizenship, fill in the forms, go through the motions, get your HKSAR passport.

b.) Britain does not recognise renunciation of citizenship in this situation - you don't have to reapply for British citizenship, you never lost it!

c.) I know this because I am taking my sons through this process currently.

I also know people with HK passports and o/seas passports. Not 'guess', not 'think', know! Thanks!

Er, you may think you know, but what you say is absolutely contradictory to what is on the UK Government website which I linked earlier.

Personally I think you're talking bollocks.

Hello ALL, according to the HK & UK immigration website, you have to renounce (give up) your British citizenship in order for the HKSAR government to finish process your naturalisation application. Also, if you do renounce your British citizenship, although I was born in the UK, I still need a very good reason why I wish to restore this. You mentioned that your sons are go through this process, so what status are they now, i.e. born overseas?
