    Student visa - dependent visa

    Hi,

I'm going to HK next fall for one year as an exchange student from Sweden. I'm assuming that this will grant me a student visa. My boyfriend is coming with me and he will search for a job there. Hopefully he would get one before we arrive and can get a work visa, but we have to look into all options. We are not married yet, but we're thinking of getting married and we might before we travel to HK.

If I understand things correctly it is possible to get a dependent visa for a spouse of someone with a student visa. Is this common and easily done? Anything else I should think of or any other options I haven't thought about? Thanks in advance!

Yes it is - but the Dependent visa for a spouse of someone on a student visa would NOT allow him to work. He would still need to be sponsored separately for an employment visa if he wanted to do that.

(See Q5 in the FAQ here: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/faq_hkv.htm )

Alright, that's good to know (altough not so good news for us of course.. ) and thanks for the link, some other useful information there as well!
I guess then the only upside with a dependent visa versus a tourist visa would be that it's not limited to 3 months (for swedish residents).

That's more or less it. Plus you get to be officially HK resident, which means things like bank accounts, credit cards, airport immigration queues, and so on tend to be easier.

What kind of dependent visa are you on? Can you elaborate a little. Have you applied for the Masters degree? Working part-time depends on the status of your visa. So need a little more details on this.
