I agree that it should be cheaper, but it isn't unfortunately!

I'll say again. Different charges for different nationalities. UK was 1300 and went up to 2200 for 12 months. US passports also attract high visa cost.

    OK, well lucky me then.

That's one reason why Australia is god's country.

It's a scam....it really depends on the person you get on whether how long the visa is or the price.

There is no set rule, so just hope you go on the right day at the right time.

I got a 12 month with no problem, no HKID, back home for the fixed price of 1100. Now they are trying to cost me 8+ trips per year, and 5000+. Makes me mad. I will mail my passport back home before doing all this drama.

....and what is this "oh you need one entry before multi-entry"? I had a 12 month multi-entry as my first chinese visa. The lady at the embassy back home said if I was dating chinese girl that she would give me 24 months, I'm serious!

You didn't get the hint? She was trying to pick you up.

Update as I just picked up a visa via CTS

Oz passport. Previously had a 3 year visa. New 3 year visa was HKD1200. Was told that it's up to the consulate's discretion whether they'd grant 1 or 3 years, and the price is the same for both.

That's the problem with CTS, sometimes they give you the correct answers, sometimes they don't... plus their fees are quite steep.
I was told by CTS that I could initially only get a 6 month visa, and both my wife and I (German passports) got a 12 month visa right away at the Wan Chai "embassy" (I had a single entry SZ visa before, she didn't have any China Visa).
