    Police Clearance

    Hello everyone!

I lived in hongkong for 4 yrs. I owe money from a lending institution and paying it off by sending the money to my friend( co-worker in the same household that i used to worked with).I kept on sending her every month since 0ct 2010-jan.2011 as the last payment of my loan will end on that month but to my surprise the lending institution kept on calling my mother in the phils saying that i didnt pay the last 2 months of my loan! i called my friend but she didnt answer me back until i found out that she got a new employer last year. Now,my question is...I am going to get the police clearance for my permanent residency here in canada, could that problem be a barrier for me in getting that police clearance? pls help me.

Sounds like your debt hasn't been fully paid. I would clarify this with your friend.

Regarding police clearance, I don't think it has much affect outside of Hong Kong and your record would stay in the territory unless they pass your case to an outside authority (e.g. interpol) which I doubt would happen.

My advice, clean your slate. Make sure what you've owed has been taken care of. Gather your payment receipts and contact the lending company directly.

Debts are a civil matter, not a criminal matter, so it won't affect your police criminal record.

Surely, as a Filipino, you should know never ever to trust another Filipino with money?

In fact you should be telling your friend via however means in The Phil. that you will be calling the police on that person! (You might find that worthless but if there is a small claim court process that you could threaten - do that first. At times just the serving of a writ ends the issue).

If there is one thing that doesn't mix and that is money and friendships. You might need to contact the lending institution to let them know what happened to your payments and they might be understanding if you need time to get them the missing payments.

An aside on another post: A criminal record in HK would matter for immigration to Canada - the other post is wrong and HK Immigration would advise Canada if a person has a criminal record! This as others note is a civil matter - not criminal and the police are not involved.

Sounds like a general statement. You sure this doesn't apply to everyone?

Unfortunately, as Satay Sue notes in another thread with referemce to the Japanese, some nationalities are better than others when it comes to trust. Like anything there is a distribution among the population but when you compare that distribtution you can see differences.

I'd be very interested to see your rankings for trust, based on nationalities...and the basis for your assumptions.
