ID cards and visas for minors

    Hello geoexpatters,

I have a question about ID cards, minors and travelling.

I now have an ID card and my wife is applying for hers this week. But since it appears that our 16 month old baby does not need an ID card, I was wondering how this affects us when we travel in and out of HK with her. She has her own passport with her own dependent's visa, but if she doesn't have an ID card, how does she get in and out of the e-channel?

Also, how do foreign consulars in HK view babies with their own passports. If both parents have ID cards, surely it is fairly easy for the little one to also get a visa for any country we'd like to travel to?

She can't. One or both of you have to cross immigration with your baby through regular channels.

Per http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/20041216.htm "Currently, Hong Kong permanent residents (except those under the age of 11) or Hong Kong residents holding Document of Identity for Visa Purposes (DI) can use their smart identity cards to perform self-service immigration clearance."

with your baby through regular channels.
Don't get scared about the "regular channel". You won't have to join the visitors queue. There is a "HK residents" channel which is largely empty these days. This one is applicable to the baby and to one or both of you who accompanies the baby.

For visiting other countries - other consulates don't expect the baby to have an ID card.

Same with our baby, she does have an ID card but that's because she is a PR with a HK passport, and ID card is a prerequisite for the HK passport. It is not a smart ID card with photo and we have to go through normal HK residents queue going in and out of HK with her.
