Need help with getting my partner to HK

    Hey everyone,

Just a brief introduction, I have recently graduated from my university and I am currently working in Hong Kong. I am able to do so because I am a Hong Kong Resident.

My partner is also a fresh university graduate. However, she does not possess residency in Hong Kong. She is Japanese - native in both Japanese and English languages.

She has been looking for entry level jobs in Japanese/multinational companies in Hong Kong.

As far as I know, she is allowed to stay in HK for 3 months as a visitor (Japanese citizen). Is she allowed to look for work during her stay, as a visitor? Or is this some kind of an offense?

Does anyone know what her chances are like of being able to come and work/live here, or have any suggestions where she should try looking?

    *We are not married yet.

    1) technically, i think it is illegal to look for work while here on a visitor visa, but i'm sure thousands of people do it all the time. just don't tell immigration that she's looking for work.

    2) her japanese fluency may help her, but i'm not sure if she'll be able to secure a visa for an entry level position.

    3) without knowing anything about her, like qualifications, experience etc, it's more than a little difficult to offer any more advice.

Thank you for the reply carang.

With regards to answer #1, since it is technically illegal - would this mean that even if she is already in Hong Kong as a visitor, she should not put her address in her resume as a local address?

Furthermore, if she does manage to obtain interviews, would this mean that her application will be automatically rejected if the employers found out she has been looking for a job while being in Hong Kong (eg. if they check her flight ticket. Just being a bit paranoid, but hey, it might happen right?).

Now with regards to #3, she just has a BA from a 4-year university, with no professional experience/qualifications. So basically a fresh graduate right out of college. Just a bunch of part-time/volunteer experience during her 4 years in university.

i would actually have her look when she is here. it is highly unlikely that a company will recruit from overseas for an entry level position.

i would leave the address on the cv and if immigration asks, she can just state that it is her boyfriend/girlfriend's address, and that she was using it for expediency's sake.

i've NEVER heard of an employer asking to see a flight ticket! seems beyond paranoid.
i HAVE heard of immigration asking for a flight ticket.

the company that employs her needs to be able to prove that she can offer something that is not readily available in hk..... that's why it's difficult for an entry position... but this is where the japanese/english skills may come into play. she needs the company to play up her skills and what makes her stand out from any local recruit.

How about a position at a Japanese school for Japanese kids? There are several here.

Or at a Japanese tutorial centre for non-Japanese, there are several in Tuen Mun.

If you two get married, she can get a dependent visa and work whatever job she wants without the company having to sponsor her.

    Just saying.

Also she will find it tough to get an entry level job where an employer has to sponsor your visa.

Imagine going into Immigration to employ a fresh grad from Japan for a job that a local could do? Best bet would be teach Japanese at a local school as mentioned before where a native speaker is preferred.

Has she thought about studying again here in HK?
