Dependent visa: 6 weeks & still waiting

I would like some advice on my husband's sitatuion ...

My husband holds a PRC passport and I am a HKID (PR) holder. Under normal circumstances I could not apply for him a dependent visa because he's from the Mainland. However because he also holds a US green card (PR status) he could apply for a dependent visa to HK. It's been more than 6 weeks now since we submitted the application. We assume we would hear something by now (successful or not) since we haven't been asked for further documents or been called in for an interview.

So I would like to ask, is it normal to wait more than 6 weeks for a result? Is the delay due to him being a mainlander? The other problem is his tourist visa will expire on Sunday and since he's already extended it once (to wait for the dependent visa to be processed) it's unlikely it will get extended again.

    Hope someone can help.

Do you have an immigration file number?

Either way, call immigration... they are the only people who can give you an update on your particular case.

My wife's dependent visa took about 3 months. These things aren't resolved quickly.

Since the application is already in place, it's best to go back to immigration to try to extend again.

Apart form calling Immigration, you could check the result online providing ref. number & date of birth of the applicant. (Ref no should be shown on your acknowledgement letter)
    GovHK: Online Application Status Enquiry

Send an email to [email protected] . Briefly mention your status & again provide your ref. no.
(They will forward the email to the right team & normally get back to you with result within 3 working days). That what we do for our clients sometimes.

Thanks for the suggestions. I called immigration, told them my husband's case and they said they would get back to me in 3 days (bummer that tomorrow is a public holiday). It's discouraging to know that it could take as long as 3 months though.

When we went to the immigration to have my husband's tourist visa extended last time, they said that they would not normally extend a mainlander's tourist visa just because the dependent visa is in process. So that's why I am not hopeful that it will get extended this time.

BTW if the dependent visa is granted is it a multiple entry visa?

Hi, I have applied for my husband's dependent visa 8 weeks ago, they sent me an acknowledgement letter within a week. On the 5th week they sent me a letter asking me for my financial proof so I replied them by fax and called my case officer and checked with him , he said he has received the fax and needs time to go through the documents. I haven't heard anything since then, my husband called our case officer last week and he has apparently gone on holiday for one week. So i'm guessing it will drag longer. I really hope they give the visa ASAP as my husband is not with me in HK, he is waiting for his visa to come.
Btw, I also called the general line before I received their reply letter asking for the financial proof, but they never called back. So I think in your case its best to go to the immigration directly with your husband.

Yes of course a dependent visa is multi-entry! Wouldn't be much good if it were not, would it?

Not such a silly question. In Japan you have to apply for the re-entry visa separately and have the choice of a single or multiple.

    I stand corrected. How odd!

Indeed, infuriating ! I think it has been streamlined now but you used to have to go and get an entry visa in a completely different place to where your visa was issued! Of course it costs extra too.
