    Passport for our baby

    Hi all,

I am from the UK (living in HK on a working visa) and my wife is an HK local. We are expecting our first baby in early July. My parents are due to come over for a visit in October, at which time we intend to go on holiday for a week somewhere in Asia (most likely Thailand).

Does anyone have any idea about applying for a UK passport for our baby in Hong Kong and how long it is likely to take? I am reluctant to book the holiday until I have some more concrete information, but likewise I want to get something booked up asap so we are organised.

    Thanks!

check their website? i'm sure they will have the info you need.

it takes about a week or so to get the birth certificate sorted, which you will need for the passport application. baby will also be eligible for a hksar passport, which you may want to apply for, too. if you choose to travel on the uk passport, then to save time, you may want to get an endorsement in the baby's passport stating that it has the ROA in hk. otherwise, you will have to take the passport for the baby to re-enter hk as a resident rather than on a tourist visa.

Thanks carang; are you saying that the baby will have the right to both a UK and an HK passport? I was under the impression that it was one or the other, but if we applied for a UK passport they could still have a HKID card (though admittedly I have done little research into this yet)

Yes I am in the process of Google searches, just sometimes I find this website provides much more straightforward answers

your children by your hk born wife will automatically get ROA. if you want to apply for a home return permit, they will need an hksar passport, too.

they can have both as far as i am aware.

my kids have canadian passports, ROA in hk and are eligible for hksar passports.

i have canadian passport, uk passport, hk roa (earned, not born here). my husband has a bn(o) passport and a hrp.

Ours took about 6 weeks. Make sure you have your full (long) British birth certificate for when you apply.

No you do not need a "British" long birth cert. a HK birth very is fine.

First I'll be very honest here. All this information is available on the respective government website and discussed at length on various forums here. To ask indicates either laziness or lack of grey matter when so easily available. But I digress and rant over.

Your child is eligible for both UK and HKSAR passports. Quickest to apply for (now) is the HKSAR one which takes a couple of weeks and needs to be done with an ID card application.

UK passports, even first applications, used to take a week. Now they are no longer processed here and get sent back to UK they take up to 6 weeks.

I never said anything about the baby's birth certificate - I said the father needs his. The HK cert for the baby is fine as that won't have a UK one unless they apply for one at a later date.

Ah, it was a bit ambiguous. Mind you I don't have the long birth cert myself and both kids have UK passports.
