    eligibility for british citizenship

    Hi all,

New to forum and first post.

I am an Australian citizen by birth, born in 1987. My parents both obtained British Passports from Hong Kong in 76 and 77 respectively, prior to moving to Australia. Their nationality status on their passports (expired 87,86) states that they are British Subject: Citizen of the UK and Colonies. Can any advise if they became British citizens other than by descent after 1983?

If so, am I eligible for a british citizenship by descent?

    Thanks

Pretty standard response. Not sure why they just don't say "we are not going to answer any of your questions". I once did get through to the helpline in the UK and the response was "well I'm not trained but I think you can do this...". The information given was incorrect. Great helpline. Should call it "go f@ck yourself line, we have government targets to meet to keep people out of the UK at all costs. Even if it is negative for the UK economy it keeps the Daily Mail happy".

How long have your parents lived in the UK? Have you ever lived in the UK?

    Hi,

I have never lived in the UK nor have my parents. I think my link is tenuous but I read this:

British Nationality Selection Scheme - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Consequences of registration
A person acquiring British citizenship under section 1(1) of the Act became a British citizen otherwise than by descentand as a result, children born subsequently in Hong Kong (or elsewhere outside the United Kingdom) are generally entitled to British citizenship by descent.
Spouses and children registered under s1(4) of the Act acquired British citizenship by descent.

    and thought i'd find out!

The helplines have been ridiculously helpless, many saying they don't deal with visa/passport issues and that I have to call New Zealand.

your parents would have had to actually APPLY for the BNSS to get full british citizenship, and the application for that ceased in 1996. so unless they actually applied thats a no. they wouldve needed to be in HK during 1991-1996 anyways (my parents did and i got full british citizenship by descent as a result)

your parents would have been CUKC and then BDTC in 1981, but neither of those are full british citizenship and probably not inheritable. you will find that the UK has many categories on underclass citizenship that are basically relics of the british empire

are you born in HK and when? if you are then you may have been eligible for BN(O) in your own right but youve missed that boat by about 15 years....

Ahh the bearer of bad news

I wasn't born in HK, in fact, never been to HK. I guess I have missed the boat completely!

    Thanks for answering though!

if you not born in hk, how can you get a hk sar passport? you don't have an hkid card as you have never came to hk, why not come to hk and see if you can apply for a hkid card, chances that you have get a right to land status
