One follow up question, so my current visa expires in March 2013 and I complete 7 year in Sept. 2013. If I can get a local company to sponsor my work visa...will I get 'new' work visa starting now or, will immigration authorities just change my employment detail at this point and extend my visa only when it expires (i.e. start of next year)?

Yes, if you can find someway to keep a valid HKID until you reach the 7 year mark you will be fine. It does not matter if you have a working visa, student, etc….it just has to remain valid. I was very often absent from Hk my last two years, sometimes as ,one as 3-4 months at a time, and I still got it, no questions asked.

You could also apply for a QMAS and if you receive it, the first time its issued, its valid for a year.

I enquired about QMAS. Isn't it for "...fresh entrants not having the right to enter and remain in HK to settle in HK..."
In my situation...since I have been in HK for 6 years now, can I still try under QMAS?

When I applied for my QMAS (which I got around 9 months after applying), I was asked to sign an extra declaration agreeing that although I was already living in Hong Kong, I would be treated as an external applicant. Apart from there, there was no issue with applying after having already lived here for a few years - and it meant that I could say in my 'essay' that I already had business contacts here...
