    pug_ster's experience tends to suggest that, at least in some offices, for the current "mop up" exercise for the few people who, for whatever reason, missed the main changeover, the process is quicker. But it certainly was as jngai describes for the main changeover.

    Also, if you're leaving town (i.e. permanent resident who is living someone else ... / leaving town), make sure you assign someone to collect your ID card.

    You can do this at the time of application and you'll need their ID number if I recollect. We've had a number of friends who've left town but maintain their residency who've switched cards and had a friend pick it up / mail it to them.

    I forgot to mention that my wife didn't have to pay a fine or fees for getting the new HK ID. While I was in HK, either my wife had to wait for 3 weeks appointment or wait in line early at the immigration office for an appointment that day. My wife had to assign someone to pick up the id and you have to give a real address.
