You've lived here for a while. That's what matters in putting together an application. chinese descent or heritage or family is a supporting factor but not a mandatory one.

Based on reading a recent thread on Naturalization, it seems it takes a year or more for processing so you might as well give it a try, I assume the passport your holding now is not a strong one and the HKSAR passport looks very good to you LOL

I suggest to apply in person. First time i tried, they checked my documents and gave me a list of what I should bring. I was missing alot of documents so i went back and prepared. Here goes the list :

    Passport / permanent hkid copy
copy of the passport you first arrived in Hongkong
Past visa slips if you can provide
First page of other passports you have used during this time in HK if you have
Your birth certificate ( must be translated and consulate approved if not in English or chinese)
    Employment letter
Tax paid receipts for last 7 years
    MPF payment proof( statement)
    Bank statements showing $$$
If u have property in HK or china, deed copy

If married : wife and children's passport / hkid copies / birth certificates

I prepared these and went back to immigration tower. They gave me an interview and checked all documents right then snd there. After i paid application fees, i was done.

    Now waiting

Depending on their citizenship - they've been known to ask for the spouse's birth certificate and kid's school enrollment proof too.

Here's a checklist that I've seen being circulated:

And confirmed with the person who received the above checklist - the wait list for non-chinese ethnicities run at around 12-18 months, with an average of 15 months. They've also been asked to preserve all financial information since the application, including all financial records / salary slips etc.

FYI - have merged a few long threads into one, like the GEP visa thread, to give people a better view of the process / time frames.

It’s been 7 months since I applied and got a call last week to advise that they will respond I’m writing by end of the week. The time usually varies.

When I applied last month, they reminded me that current processing time is15 months. Maybe they do that not to have us call or email them.

7-9 months seems to be the average.

What I am concerned about is the Home Return Permit. Seems Chinese PSB really take their time.
