Should baby be born in Hong Kong or Mainland China?

    Hi
I am British Citizen, fully-fledged, born and bred, married to Chinese wife, living in Shenzhen, China.
No connection with HK as such (other than owning a HK offshore company) but it is only an hour or two from our place across the border to HK Central.
Wondering if there is any benefit to our baby being born in Hong Kong as opposed to Mainland China, particularly as regards passports and ID and of course future freedom of travel, education and employment.
Also, can anyone please confirm whether or not our child can hold a Chinese ID card as well as a British passport?
Thanks for any help or advice.

that might be true. But if you can...than your baby would have HK permanent residency being that your wife is ethnic Chinese. Worth looking into, imo.

Mainland women are effectively barred from giving birth in Hong Kong. Have you thought about taking her to the UK for the birth?

    From the Government:

The Government announced on April 17 that in 2013, there would not be any quota for non-local pregnant women, whose husbands are non-Hong Kong residents, to give birth in Hong Kong. Both public and private hospitals will not accept any bookings by non-local pregnant women for delivery in Hong Kong in 2013. Meanwhile, under the existing arrangements, Mainland pregnant women whose husbands are Hong Kong permanent residents or holders of the Permit for Proceeding to Hong Kong and Macao (One-way Permit) may make delivery bookings for 2013 at local private hospitals after antenatal checkup in Hong Kong and upon referral by the attending doctor, and be issued the Confirmation Certificate on Delivery Booking (Confirmation Certificate).

As long as you are OK with the quality of pre and post natal services where you are then there seems little value in trying to birth in HK.
Your child will be entitled to a British passport through you as the father and that gives RTL in HK.
