    Work Visa to Study Visa

    I am currently on a work visa that expires in June 2015; however, I will be attending grad school at CUHK starting summer 2014. Will I need to cancel my work visa and then apply for a new study visa? If I do this, will my time towards 7 years for permanent residency be re-started?
    I will be leaving my job in February and then travel for 4 months before returning to HK to start grad school. I was hoping to keep my work visa active until I return to HK and then obtain a study visa without re-starting the 7 year clock, but I do not know if this is possible. Also, one I cancel my work visa and start a study visa, will I need to go through the tax clearance procedure?

    As long as there's no long break between visas, you'll be fine for the 7-year PR requirement.

    Technically, if you are employed and are planning to leave Hong Kong for over one month, you are required to settle your taxes before departure. See page 2 of this document:
