Temporary permanent residency... my god. It gets confusing when Chinese nationality law is ontop of a modified pre-existing system which then sorta accommodates foreigners in a way that China does not.

But be thankful that in the SAR's the situation is still not TOO bad.. Compared with the mainland, Macau and Hong Kong give out P.R. like candy.

Typical loose usage of wording in Hong Kong.

Even becoming a permanent resident in Hong Kong is not permanent. You can lose it.

I think also eligible for government handouts. I'm not sure what else is different.

I think Portuguese people also get treated the same as Chinese people to some degree in Macao. Eg, they can just move there.

I remember reading somewhere that basically, if one were to take the government to court after having their 'permanent' resident status removed at the age of 21 then they would likely win due to the use of the word 'permanent'. Anyway, you would still have right to land which means you don't need visa to live or work here.

    Never heard that?

But I was referring to the clause that says if you leave HK for a period of 3 years... You lose your PR.

Have there ever actually been such cases where that were successfully fought?

No such cases that I know of. I just stumbled upon an article that mentioned this a while ago when reading about the residency rules as one of my daughters was born here.
