Can i apply a dependents Visa w/o HKID yet?

    Hello all,

    could anyone clarify my predicament?
I have a work visa, haven't applied for HKID yet...could i apply for a dependents visa for my husband already?
Or if i have a temporary HKID (which would be issued initally right?) could I apply for the dependents visa asap?

    would appreciate some help....thanks guys!

Yes, you can apply for the Dependant's visa even at the same time as you apply for the Employment Visa (obviously too late in your case).

You are aware that you MUST apply for the HKID within 28 days of your Employment Visa being activated?

You have to apply for you HKID right away .. so what's the problem? If I recall correctly, I got my HKID temporary card as part of my visa process.... so I'm abit confused by your post! Is it that you are outside HK? If so, I'm sure you can apply for dependent if they are also with you and you are arriving together? perhaps someone else can clarify.

The HR dept informed just today that they scheduled me for an appointment with the Kowloon Registration of Persons office branch on friday. Will they give me a temporary HKID? and can I apply go the dependents visa after that?
No, they didn't apply the dependents for us. Tod me it wasn't their policy so on and so forth....

problem is the HR dptmnt...they've given me different infos as to how to go about the application for my HKID. and they swamped me with work first day i arrived so asked them just today to give me time to process my HKID. PM'ed PDLM before about the whole process because hr wasn't guiding me....
No, my husband isn't with me yet. He wants to follow once i've rented a more permanent place....as of now am renting one teenie-weenie room....

You can apply for the Dependant Visa any time you want. But you will need some supporting documentation (copies of your husband's passport, your marriage certificate, your bank statement, contract of employment or some proof of your ability to support him financially while he is in Homg Kong, and so on). All of the forms and guidance notes are on the Immigration Department's website which is really easy to find your way around.

ah I see.....all of the documents you mentioned, I do have. Except for the bank statement since I still can't open an account (as I understand I have to have an HKID card first?) I've been told twice by HR to go to the bank and open and said that's it's alright to do so...but been told by the bank (twice) that I cannot still. So you can imagine my exasperation with the HR people i nour company....totally clueless with regards to correct procedures for expats....

    thanks all by the way....

You can open a bank account without a HKID card. Both my husband and I did. But they told a colleague of mine she could not. Just be persistent!

You can also, obviously, use bank account statements from overseas to highlight your financial standing too.

PS - get a good amount of time available to go to apply in person - those queues in the Imm dept can be brutal.

thanks for the advice. i'm sure it's gonna be brutal (the line) i just hope they (the office) give me enough time to settle all of these things.
Being swamped with workloads, haven't even settled in my chair yet.

thanks again guys. appreciate all of the advice.

    Hi PDLM,
I have a follow up query,
Would it be a problem if my husband comes over on a tourist visa, even if the dependents visa I applied for him hasn't been approved yet?...the officer told me that it would take 4-6 weeks. I'm planning that he just applies for an extension for his saty and just wait for the visa results here in HK. Would that be ok? the immigration officer i asked, told me he wasn't sure if it's ok or not.....hmmm

    thanks!
