Getting a visa - do you need to send off your passport, and dealing with the domicile...

    Hello,

Moving to Hong Kong for a new job this winter and I'm starting the visa application.

Right now, I am living in the UK (I am an American citizen) and long story short, the government here has refused my new visa and are holding my passport until I leave the country.

To proceed with applying for the Hong Kong visa, do I need my passport in hand? Can I just fill out the forms and send off a color scan?

I am also considering going back to America to stay with family before heading to HK, but there is a question on the visa form about my "domicile" and how long I've lived there. Up until recently, I would have listed to the UK and stated that I've lived here for three years, but if I leave, then my domicile will be the US, but I'd think it would look weird if I put down that I've only been there a month or so...

    Any ideas? Thank you!

    Why was it refused?

Remember that anything you put, you might need supporting documents to prove it. So less is better, and make it simple for yourself.

Do you have a job lined up? I believe they should be able to process it with a copy.

My UK visa was refused due to a mistake - we did not provide enough proof of financial status. I am sure anyone who has dealt with the nightmare that is UK immigration can understand how easy it is to do something wrong with the application. We could appeal, but with this HK job lined up, we're not feeling much of a reason to. As for the government holding my passport, this is what they do to all people refused visas, it does not mean I've done something 'bad', so to speak.

As for less is better, well, I am still not sure of what to put! I could say UK, as I have a recent visa to show them proving that I've been here, or I could go for the US...ideas?
