Application for HKID whilst on Working Holiday Visa (WHV)

    Hi all,

I am looking for some information or to hear of personal experiences regarding the above subject..

I am a British citizen who moved to Hong Kong in May 2016. I obtained a WHV before arrival and I may now live and work in HK until May 2017.

Many people have said it may be worthwhile applying for a HKID and that it's absolutely possible whereas some have said they are unsure of my eligibility. I am soon to be starting contract employment and there is a possibility for permanent visa sponsorship once my WHV is almost expired. For this reason I think it may be worth getting a HKID sorted.

I find the HK immigration website incredibly convoluted and unhelpful on this subject.

So as above, anybody in a similar position or has previously been in this position I would like to hear from you.

Please let me know if I have been unclear with any of the above information.

    Thanks

Since WHV requires proof of health insurance including hospitalization I would venture you aren't eligible for a HKID. Holders of an HKID get free healthcare.

Of course you must get an ID card by law. Registration/Replacement of Hong Kong Identity Card | Immigration Department Click on who is required to apply...

Anyone who is here for 6 months or longer on a valid visa has to apply for a HKID card anyway I believe.

Second that. I was under the belief that those who will stay in HK longer than 6 months must have the ID card.

Above thread has a mention about someone's friend on WHV and got ID card as the visa is valid for more than 180 days..
