    Student Dependent visa

Hi Anyone who has experience of applying Student dependent visa can help me with my concerns
    1. The IMMD website says that if student has enough funds to take care of living expenses of his/her spouse then they may get student dependent visa's but what are enough funds?
    2. The rules say that dependents need permission from Director of Immigration to work there, how practical is it to get that permission? or will dependents need to find a employer first to sponsor their visa?

I don't want to be in situation that I choose to study in HK and my wife isn't able to join because as per HK rules I don't have enough funds. Someone with experience of dealing with student dependent visa can help please.

Can someone guide if her visa is even a possibility or not.

Secondly, rules say that she needs permission from Director of immigration to work there. Can someone guide how difficult is it to get that permission or she will need to go by route of getting en employer to sponsor her working visa.

Applicants admitted for study (in full-time undergraduate or post-graduate local programmes in local degree-awarding institutions) may apply to bring in their spouse and unmarried dependent children under the age of 18 to the HKSAR under the prevailing dependant policy. Persons admitted or applying for admission for study will be the sponsors of their accompanying dependants to the HKSAR. An application for admission of a dependant may be favourably considered if:

    • there is reasonable proof of a genuine relationship between the dependant and the sponsor;
    • there is no known record to the detriment of the dependant; and
    • the sponsor is able to support the dependant's living at a standard well above the subsistence level and provide him/her with suitable accommodation in the HKSAR.

If you are talking about the money you might have to see the cost of Living in Hong Kong and they might ask you with the 6 months of Bank record. To be Honest there is no specific Amount I guess. Just good enough to have food, shelter and off course your education fees. Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

You should be ok with hkd20,000 per month of stay. You might get away with less than that. Below 10k is unlikely

    Hi Katherine,
I will already be there and paying rent and affording my living. In my view and as per my limited research if you don't have to pay rent then 5k per person per month is good enough to support living expenses.
20k what you mentioned is it including or excluding rental expense.

    work permission for student dependent

Also student dependents needs permission from Director of Immigration for working in HK. What are chances of getting that permission so that employer sponsoring is not required.

Research PhD students are paid HKD 15k outta which 3.5k goes to tuition and rest for living. Immigration approves dependent visa for all above students with no issue. You can assume 10k to 12k excluding tuition as safe limit.

Its extremely hard to get approval from immigration for dependents to work. Havent seen 1 succesful case till now. Employer sponsoring visa would be the best option.
