Living in China on Home Return Permit and flying to another country using what passport?

    Hello,

If someone living in China held both a Home Return Permit as well as a British passport, how would they leave China to fly directly to somewhere outside of Hong Kong (e.g. Thailand) if they are living in China using the HRP?

Would they simply present the Home Return Permit on exit and entry of China, and use the British passport on entry/exit of the other country?

Or do Mainland authorities check the validity of travel documents to the destination country - which would render the HRP invalid since it is only usable within HK to Mainland?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

I have both, HRP and foreign passport.
Airline might want to see visa for your destination country, so you just show foreign passport and they type the number in their puter.
Immigration only wants to see HRP.

There is no such thing as render it invalid, unless you are a political activist, that means you can not go to China anymore.

I live (part time) in China with HRP and hold a British Passport. Just enter China with HRP and fly out with your British Passport. They'll want to see your HRP when you leave as well though.

I entered with HRP from HK and flew to Vietnam from Guangzhou earlier this year with no problems.

Ahhh amazing, thanks very much, very helpful! I was under the impression as you would technically have dual nationality that this would be much more difficult

Not might want, airlines are by law required to check that you can enter the destination country. Otherwise the journey stops right there.

HRP must be used to exit Mainland China if you used it to enter. If you lose your HRP in Mainland China, you can apply for a temporary document with a short validity to exit from Immigration Department in Mainland China or CTSHK branch in Luohu Shenzhen. It is the responsibility of airlines to check your visa to the destination or which passport you have allowing you visa free visit to the destination.

The chinese government allows HK and Macau residents born with Chinese nationality to have dual nationality and non Chinese passports but does not officially acknowledge the other nationalities and foreign travel documents.
