    New work visa questions

Moving jobs, I got these somewhat strange "requirements" from the company that will be handling visa application for me (outsourced to by the future employer - both companies are large internationsl):

    1. They want me to bring my passport for application submission, promising to return it next day. When I applied two years ago, I did so from abroad.

    2. They asked me for my current employer's reference letter. I haven't even resigned yet and won't do for another couple of weeks.

Is it normal nowadays or are they being overly paranoid?

Sounds right to me. As you are changing jobs you are applying for a change of employment and not a new visa. You need to passport to file this as you are filing in HK. In relation to the reference letter, the Immigration Department won't grant the change of employment without it. They will determine when you can start working with the new employer based on when you finish with your current.
