Verification of who you are + I suspect higher definition.

Cards don't expire. This is just a one-off tech upgrade isn't it?

Immigration Department (ImmD) announced today (August 27) that Hong Kong residents born in 1977, 1978 or 1979 and holding the old form of smart identity card should bring along their old form of smart identity card and apply for new smart identity cards in person at a Smart Identity Card Replacement Centre (SIDCC) (see Annex I) from September 20 (Monday) to November 18, 2021 (Thursday). The SIDCCs are open from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday (except public holidays).

Upon changing my HKID to the new SmartID card will I also have to change my HRP straight after? The card quotes the ID card number on the back.

HKID replacement has nothing to do with HRP, HKID number does not change through out life and HRP is an independent card (although linked with HKID number) with its own validity..

Do you have to pick up from the same replacement centre or can you go to another?

Just to share my experiences and help anyone planning on going through the quarantine and SmartID change - obviously might change as Government advice changes.

Originally planned for the Wan Chai replacement centre as it was next to the DQH. Changed to 4 days earlier via the IMMD app and went to the Sheung Shui replacement centre instead.

Was allowed to do it on the Medical Surveillance days (couldn’t do Sunday as they are closed - I’m on day 4. Needed to scan LeaveHomeSafe QR on arrival, Amber code is OK. Need to wear mask at all times except for taking photo.

Arrived early at 9:30am (original appointment was booked 10:45am), completed and out by 9:45am (15mins).

    Process was quick - see below;

Show old HKID at first counter to get a paper slip, go to machine kiosk to insert card, verify with both thumb prints and check the personal details (name, address, occupation, nationality, birth date and location, education, marital status etc).

Kiosk is in Chinese, but most instructions are graphical. Can set to English in the top right corner of the screen.

Once verified an A4 Form is printed with the same details.

Go to waiting area (few mins) for number to be shown on the screen - suggest you take this as a chance to take a record photo of the forms here for yourself as they are taken away later.

Then go to a manned booth where they check your details. Officer said I was late for my call up period and gave me a form to confirm reason if you were late (outside of country was one). Had to ask for English form as I couldn’t write my name clearly in Chinese.

Then scanned thumbs again (left then right), then photo taken twice for you to choose.

Once selected the officer gives you a printed form with your collection dates (suggested you could pick up in alternative location), the other forms are retained.

All friendly staff and lots of hand sanitiser stations around.

They should be open on Saturday - check the website for booking times, although it was fairly empty today.

Kept my old ID card, they said come back on 24th = 15th Mon (Day 0) and 24th Wed (Day 7) - working days.

You can select pickup between collection counter or set-service kiosk.
