Does the immigration department verify educational information?

So my degree is a major in political science with a minor in economics and I have received a job offer for a research role at a small family office type fund. The HR told me to put down major in economics as this would increase my chances of getting a higher pass rate on the GEP application. My diploma just says BA of Arts without a major/concentration specification. But if the government calls up my university and asks I'm sure it will be a little awkward.

Is this a good idea?

Immigration will not waste time or money calling up every GEP applicants University asking if what they wrote is true or not LOL
they will only look at what is provided if required.
