BBC - HKID / HRP and Chinese Visa

I am a British Born Chinese with UK passport with a 3 star HKID card.

My home return permit expired this summer (have not renewed it as I am currently living in the UK). I have a 3 star HKID card.

I will need to travel to work regularly for China. Would it be OK to apply for a Chinese visa at the Chinese embassy in London? I contemplated renewing my HRP for this purpose but the Chinese nationality law makes the situation very confusing.

It sounds like there is a 99% chance you are legally a Chinese national (unless if your 3 stars were printed by mistake and you got your first HRP before they started checking for an HKSAR passport). The Chinese embassy will very likely not give you a visa on your British passport unless given proof that you aren't a Chinese national.

If you want to get a visa instead of renewing your HRP, I think you will need to either get some documentation from IMMD HK proving you aren't a Chinese national, or declare a change of nationality (in effect renouncing your Chinese nationality).
