Hong Kong GEP renewal passport expiring date

    I have a question here:

The current Hong Kong work permit normally follows the 2-3-3 year pattern. Say if I had stayed here for 5years, and going to do my second renewal in June, however, my passport expires in May 2024, which means there is less than 3years. What would be the scenarios for the duration of my renewal? for 2 years? or 3 years?

    Thanks you!

My understanding is that the passport expiry does not affect the duration of the work permit renewal. If you are concerned, why not renew the passport now?

they will give you a GEP visa that expires 1 mth before the expiry of your passport.. so if your passport is going expire early, and you have a choice of extending the passport before the visa, then better do that..

Thanks. Normally I can only renew my passport within 6 month before expiration unless the pages are full.

This is not correct. One of our employees could only get the work permit extended for about 1.5 years as his passport expires in late 2022. Otherwise it would have been 3 years.

    I will second that.

New visa sticker will have an expiry date which is about a month earlier than your passport's.

Best to renew passport then apply for the extension.

It was a few years ago now, but I had to carry around two passports for a while as my work visa was in my old passport and I had a new one.

If you run out of pages and have to renew, then it's fine, visa is still valid. Happened to me too.

But they won't stick a visa with expiry beyond your passport's.

Was that because your old passport was full and had to reissue a new one, or was it because it expired ?
I thought that would be the arrangement and unfortunately Immigration didn't agree to issue a GEP that's longer than my passport expiry.
