Renewal of UK passport before 1997

    Hello everybody,
For a story I am writing (as an amateur), I would like to know if a British citizen traveling to Hong Kong before 1997 could have their passport renewed there? (Without being a permanent resident there.)
Hope you can answer me, Mike

Yes. I renewed my passport when just a resident, not PR.

    Even after 1997 you could.

But maybe you're asking 'without being a resident there'?

Actually, my character is visiting HK for a few weeks and intend to renew his UK passport while there.

I think UK passports could be renewed at the British consulate in Hong Kong until 2013. No residency requirements.

Before 1997, would someone have gone to the immigration department to renew their British passport - there was no HKSAR passport.

The consulate was only opened in Jan 1997 and you could get a passport there up until 2014 (according to wiki) and yes it would have been HK immigration you went to Pre 97.
