The fingerprint registration is _AFTER_ HK Immigration and _BEFORE_ CN immigration. Whether you're allowed to return from there easily I'm not sure. But there is probably some way to do it, e.g. "I missed my train, will try again later" or some excuse.

Though to get to this point of HSR station, you need to have a valid ticket (which is the initial ID scan at the very beginning). But you can just buy a random $75 futian ticket for it I guess.

Somewhat begs the question why you want a China travel permit at all then, no?

Its a 5 year permit, id rather be able to use the echannels when i do want/need to go to china.

If i can sort out the fingerprints beforehand with a simple trip to west kowloon then why wouldnt i do that first?

Just head up to one of the other boarder crossings, it takes about 10 mins in and out.

You can do the registration goto Futian and turn back. Its very short turnaround and can also check if the MTP works in the e-channel gates.

The counter is AFTER HK immigration but BEFORE China immigration. Basically after Duty-Free go to the extreme left and there will be a counter. It is only open from 0800-1800, so you need to time it well. There were only 3 people ahead of me and it took like less than 10 minutes including the queue.

This is what the registration area looks like:

After registration, I still had to use the "Special Lane" at the foreigner section of HSR Immigration. I believe I was allowed to skip the passport holders (which have their own lane), but they were trying to prematurely queue in the Special Lane so that was a bit of an awkward conversation.

Coming back the e-channel worked fine. Not sure if it will work via MTR crossing (Lo Wu / Lok Ma Chau) or other immigration points (e.g. via Vietnam land border, Airports or Heihe ferry terminal).
hey man, this is really helpful, since I just got my hrp recently and I was looking to take hsr .
