Expired Home Return Permit and HKID - which first?

    Hi Everyone,

I been searching this forum...but been seeing a bit if inconsistent info. I have my Home Return Permit and HKID expired (old chip)....I plan to go to HK in December to get them both renewed. I plan to renew my documents in the following order:

    1) Renew Home Return Permit
    2) Renew HKID

What I want to know is, can I renew my Home Return Permit using an expired HKID? I want to renew my Home Return Permit first, so I can return to china asap.

    Thank you so much!

How about applying for HkSAR passport and the "China Travel Document" from your overseas Chinese consulate. The latter is valid for two years allowing multiple entry/exit to/from mainland China.

Possession of an HK passport is a necessary condition for applying for an HRP

In all likelihood you are a Chinese national, else you would not have got your first HRTP.
Your Canadian citizenship is not recognized by China thus they won’t ask you to renounce it.

Secondly, these days you need to present a HK passport when applying for a HRTP.
And if you don’t live within Great(er) China you don’t qualify for HRTP but should apply
for a so called “China Travel Document" , as advised in post #2
