You don't need the Chinese name until you receive the approval in principle from HK ImmD (after 12-18 months). And you aren't committed to anything (except the initial application fee) until you accept the approval in principle and proceed with renunciation. You need the Chinese name on the day you go to ImmD with your Indian renunciation certificate to accept citizenship and get your new HKID. There's no extra bureaucracy - you just write your chosen Chinese name in the box on the ImmD form in addition to your "English" name. Make sure you know the Chinese Commercial Codes for your chosen name to avoid any errors in transcription.

I've not done it yet; I thought I need to enter the Chinese name I want on the ID874 form

That's good to hear, in that case I should get it started since there is such a long wait anyway, and think of a name in the meantime.

They check your passport /nationality as part of the MTP application process, that is it.

Your HKID number is actually printed on the back of the MTP.
In my case the MTP also states my nationality, and the back also has my passport number. So the linkage on Chinese Immigration's side might be a bit more.

But I will try it out at Lo Wu and see what happens anyway when the time comes

Yes you must do the process for naturalization first. All other steps / processes will come later on. While you apply for naturalization you are free to travel anywhere with your existing documents and MTP. Chinese name and other stuff you have until close to end 2026 to worry about provided you apply now. Expect long waiting time as even you mentioned that there is a huge queue for it.

In the meantime just take your MTP and passport for China travel for first time and get all necessary processes done like registering Fingerprints etc. Good Luck.
