Canadian passport with soon to be HKID RTL

    Hello all,
I will be going to HK to study in the fall and I am in the middle of my HKID RTL. I am at the stage of them asking to verify my original documents which I have got my Aunt doing for me because I am in Canada. My plan is that to avoid a student visa, I will enter HK in mid August (3 weeks before semester starts) and hopefully take my picture and get my ID. I will then have to leave HK due to being on a tourist passport and then re entering with my HKID so I can study. First, this is what I have to do right? I have to leave and re enter on the ID right? Second, will I still be protected with my Canadian passport/citizenship because my HKID is not a citizenship right? Just allows me to work, study and stay but nothing to do with Chinese citizenship right?

    Thanks

Yep, just holding the HKID alone in your case still entitles you to the consular services offered by the Canadian government since you're not considered a Chinese national.

Also, you don't necessarily have to leave and re-enter once you get your HKID. They'll usually affix a label on your passport with "The holder of this travel document has the Right to Land in Hong Kong in accordance to 2AAA(or whatever)" or "Previous conditions of stay are hereby canceled".
