To clarify a few things, you absolutely cannot work at any other job while you are here on a DH visa nor would any employer look at your applications with any seriousness. But it does get you in and at least takes the time pressure off.

If you get married later, yes you can then apply for a dependents visa. They can do it all while you remain in Hong Kong with a release from your employer once the dependents visa is ready and then a change of status. However, often it is just as easy to exit to Macau for the night to exit as a DH and re-enter as a dependent.

I haven't looked into the requirements for a student visa etc but these may be a viable option for you.

yes, you can have the domestic visa for applying it and your boyfriend will be your employer. But if you're planning to use your skills for other line of work, i'm afraid nobody will help you except if you will compromise your safety cos it's illegal to work outside except the one who signed in your contract. On the other hand if you want to apply as sponsorship by your boyfriend, you can ask him to apply for as a tourist for 3 months and you can renew it if you like. Until you got the time for you to settle down and be his dependant.

On a domestic helper you can NOT (legally) do any other work - although it is not unknown for some girls to take on part time (p/t) usually as a helper at another house - neighbour or friend of the employer

A d/h contract is the quickest way to get into Hong Kong and usually as part of the terms of the contract the helper has to be resident at the home of her employer - you will see this in the d/h contract application form

Suggest your boyfriend gets a set of DH application forms studies the requirements and make sure his friend is certain he will assist.

Why, if your boyfriend is a resident does he not apply himself .. I would want to see a genuine reason for this before I left home !!!

If, after arriving in Hong Kong, say after six months you marry your boyfriend then you can apply to have a dependants visa thereafter as a dependant you can work legally

Gays cannot get married and even if they can do it in Canada, it is not recognised in Hong Kong. DH-contracts might be a possibility for bi-national couples.

But on the risk of never getting a decent job as this is illegal in Hong Kong.

Uh you need to be married for dependant visa. There are SOME rare cases where you prove wedding plans and it gains you a dependent visa, but these plans must be like places booked and invitations etc. Not an engagement.
