    Working as a Contractor in Hong Kong?

    Hi,

    I would really like some help. I've been offered a job contracting in Hong Kong. The company is sorting out health insurance, travel insurance, relocation etc.

    I guess I wanted to know - What are the implications of working as a contractor in Hong Kong?

    For instance, how is tax paid? Do I need to set up a company like many do in the UK? Do I do my own tax returns?

    Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

    When I worked as a contractor I did so by working through a limited off-the-shelf company. You need to keep your own accounts and get an audit each year. Fairly simple unlike the UK and no VAT to worry about. You will need to employ an accountant for the auditing and optionally the tax returns (individual and company).

    You have the right to work in Hong Kong? Otherwise you're going to need a visa or work illegally.

    Yeah - the company I'll be employed by has fixed up the VISA already. It's an international company with a fairly new office in Hong Kong so they've paid a lawyer that specialises to fix it all up.

    All health insurance and travel is covered by also covered by them so I don't have to worry about it.

    I can't see how they would get you an employment visa if they are not actually employing you?

    Applying for work permit through own shelf company

    Hey,

    So I'm guessing the shelf company you established had to sponsor yourself for a work permit - correct? How did that process go - any suggestions or advice to make the process as painless as possible? I'm thinking about doing the same thing myself as it seems working through an umbrella company is quite expensive.

    Any advice or direction would be much appreciated.

    I already had PR at the time so it was easier for me.
