visa renewal...do they keep your passport?

my dependent visa is exp. 19 aug, so we'll have to apply for a new one at the end of this month but i'm planing a trip sometime during8-15 aug,

so i was wondering do they keep your passport with the immigration during the whole visa renewal or do they just ask you to bring the passport in whenever the visa is ready for pick up?

They don't keep it - they need to see it at the beginning of the process and then at the end to put the new sticker in.
