Smile Visa For My Baby' Nanny

My husband and I are Canadian citizens. My husband has a full time job in HK. We have a 15m old son who is taken care by a nanny and my parents in China. His nanny is a Chinese Passport holder. I want to get her a visa to HK so she can continue to take care of my son. Does anyone know whether it is possible? What kind of visa should I apply for her?

    Thanks.

    Christina,

I'd use this site as a starting point to do your research on hiring a foreign helper.

    http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_5.5.htm

Finally, you should email immigration at [email protected] I am sure there are some complications involved when hiring someone from China v/s Phillipines or other Asian countries, due to Chinese emigration and HK immigration restrictions on mainlanders.

    no success from my enquiries

I'm in similar situation and it seemsnear imposible to get a domestic helper visa for a Mainland resident. I'd love to hear a success story (feel free to email privately).

As an aside, it seems odd that the HK government can pick and choose nationalities for a nanny. What makes a Filipina any better than a Chinese? For that matter, why couldn't I bring an American if I wanted and they agreed? There's no logic in allowing importation of one nation rhater than another. The only thing I could understand is if HK didn't allow foreign workers in order to provide local employment but htat's not the case.

    Just my $0.02

The reasons are historic (I have a couple of good articles bookmarked somewhere) and yes, you can safely blame the Brits for this policy.

    However, there is some hope.

    Thanks for your replies.

You are right. It is not allowed to hire a nanny from mainland. This is the answer I got from Immigration Department of HK yesterday. It is hard for me to understand.

I will be glad to see the hope turns into reality soon!
