As a visitor, yes, 180 days, if you hold a full British Citizen passport.
Note that as a visitor you may not come to Hong Kong for the purpose of study, taking up employment, training, investment or residence. For any of those you would need a visa.

On the visitor/residency issue. Is it OK to stay at relatives for 6 months as a visitor? I think this is OK
But I don't think I am allowed to rent a flat for 6 months. What if I stay at a relatives unoccupied flat for 6 months? Is this OK?
Yes if the immigration official lets you stay for 6 months, you can stay for 6 months. But of course they have discretion to give you less.
Just make sure you have enough money to support your stay, in case they ask you a lot of questions and want to check.
